Petrosian on the King’s Indian Attack

By IM Bill Paschall

Recommended for Intermediate Players

Presented by International Master Bill Paschall for ChessLecture.com

Tigran Petrosian (June 17, 1929 – August 13, 1984) was a Soviet Armenian Grandmaster and World Chess Champion from 1963 to 1969. His nickname "Iron Tigran" due to his almost impenetrable defensive playing style emphasizing safety above all else. He was considered to be the hardest player to beat by the authors of a 2004 book History of Chess.

The King's Indian Attack (or KIA), also known as the Barcza System is a chess opening system for White. This opening is not a series of specific moves, but rather a system that can be played from many different move orders.

Here Bill shows us 7 games in which Petrosian expertly utilizes the KIA.

Content: 2 hours and 54 minutes of instruction and analysis in a series of 7 lectures.

ECO: A05, A07, B20, B40, B50, A04

Fans on Chesslecture.com said: Excellent game. You highlighted a number of key variations: the early c6 by Black; how it was possible to play e4 earlier and why the knight on e5 was necessary to name just a few. Thanks William!
